Permits for overseas nationals

If you work in Switzerland or stay in Switzerland for more than three months, you need a permit. Permits are issued by the Amt für Migration und Integration (Office for Migration and Integration).

Permit extension

Is your foreign national identity card expiring soon? Please bring the following documents to the Stadtbüro (City Office) in person:

Residence permit B or permanent residence permit C

  • Filled out and signed Notice of Expiry
  • Valid passport/identity card
  • Foreign national identity card

Permit for short-term resident L

  • Employment contract
  • Valid passport/identity card
  • Foreign national identity card

Cross-border commuter permit G

  • Please contact your employer directly

Permit F (provisionally admitted foreigners) / Permit N (permit for asylum seekers)

  • Foreign national identity card

Once your new foreign national identity card arrives at the Stadtbüro (City Office), we will inform you in writing, by SMS or by E-Mail upon request. The fees must be paid upon collection (payment is possible by EC/Post and credit card).

Fee waiver

To waive the fees for your new foreign national identity card, you can request a confirmation of social assistance benefits from Soziale Dienste (Social Services). Submit this confirmation together with the Notice of Expiry. Please show the letter from Social Services to the personnel in the Stadtbüro (City Office).
