City of pioneers

Founded by the Romans as “Aquae Helveticae”, Baden later became the famed meeting place of the Swiss Confederates and was always a popular gathering point for business, politics and society. Switzerland’s first theatre hall, the first railway connection in Switzerland and the founding of the BBC company (today known as ABB) all made history in Baden.

Cosmopolitanism and a pioneering spirit still dominate the city’s character today. Current investments in infrastructure projects such as the large thermal spa, the spa theatre, school buildings, office/residential blocks, transport infrastructure and a new cantonal hospital amount to around one billion Swiss francs on their own. Baden is also home to many start-ups and young SMEs that are conquering new international markets with innovative approaches.
