Light installation and a relaxed Christmas atmosphere
Stroll through the unique light installation The Baden Christmas lights in Badstrasse
During the Advent season, a one-of-a-kind light installation by the famous artist Willi Walter has been illuminating the entire pedestrian area of the Baden city centre since 2007. A total of 10,200 LEDs and specially created angelic figures turn the city into a 1.8-km-long piece of tangible art. The Christmas lights are powered fully by Aquae electricity, the locally produced hydro power. Electrical consumption is approx. 12 kW, which represents around 6 times the power of a hoover. The Christmas lights stay on all night instead of the normal street lights.
You can stroll through the gorgeous Christmas lights until 6 January (Epiphany). Enjoy the unique atmosphere.
Every year on Wednesday before the first Advent Sunday, the traditional "Liechterwecke" ceremony takes place. At this ceremony, the city’s unique light installations come to life on every street. The magnificent piece of light art is “awakened” by children with hundreds of little bells. The bakeries offer Spanischbrödli (local speciality) to the children as a reward, and there’s hot mulled wine for the adults.
